If you search for a freelance developer in Lucknow, you will find hundreds of profiles on Upwork, Fiverr, LinkedIn, Justdial, Sulekha and Google Maps. Many are good. Some are not. This guide helps a business owner, founder or shop owner choose without needing technical knowledge.
I am Ajay Upadhyay, a freelance full-stack developer based in Lucknow. I build websites, e-commerce stores, mobile apps and WhatsApp automation, so I have sat on both sides of this conversation. Everything below applies whether you hire me or someone else.
1. Which type of freelancer do you actually need?
The word freelancer covers very different skills. Hiring the wrong type is the most common reason projects fail. Here is how the market in Lucknow splits up.
- Freelance web developer or website developer: builds business websites, landing pages and web apps. Look for Next.js, React, Node.js or WordPress experience depending on your need.
- Freelance full stack developer or MERN stack developer: handles both the visible website and the server, database and admin panel in one person.
- Freelance mobile app developer: Android, iOS, React Native or Flutter apps. Ask for apps live on Google Play or the App Store.
- Freelance Shopify or e-commerce developer: online stores, payment gateways such as Razorpay, coupons and shipping setup.
- Freelance WhatsApp bot or chatbot developer: WhatsApp Business API, automated replies, booking flows and AI chatbots.
- Freelance web designer or UI UX designer: layouts, branding and prototypes. Design alone does not mean the site will be built or will load fast.
- Freelance SEO expert, Google Ads expert or digital marketer: brings customers to the site. A developer can set up tracking and a Google Business Profile but a long-term marketing retainer is a different job.
- Freelance content writer, graphic designer, logo designer or video editor: supporting skills you may add later.
I cover the first five: websites, full-stack web apps, mobile apps with React Native, Shopify and e-commerce, and WhatsApp automation. For design-heavy branding or a monthly ad-management retainer I recommend hiring a specialist and I am happy to work alongside them.
2. Where to find a freelance developer in Lucknow
- Google and Google Maps: search phrases like freelance web developer Lucknow or website developer near me and check the Business Profile reviews.
- Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer.com: payment protection and verified reviews, but you pay platform fees and the freelancer may not be local.
- LinkedIn: good for seeing work history and mutual connections.
- Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART: local directories. Check the work, not just the listing.
- Referrals: ask other business owners in Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj, Aliganj or your own market who built their site. A referral from a happy client beats any ad.
Whichever channel you use, ask for live links, not screenshots. Open them on your phone and check that they load quickly and look right.
3. How to evaluate a freelance developer's portfolio
- Open the live projects. Are they real businesses with real customers? Do they work on a phone?
- Check if the project is similar to yours. A store, a booking site and a mobile app need different experience.
- Ask what they personally did. Some freelancers show work done by a team or copied from a template.
- Look at the apps on Google Play or the App Store. A published app is stronger proof than a demo video.
- Speak to a past client. A serious freelancer will share one contact or a testimonial.
- Check communication. Do they reply clearly and on time before you pay anything?
You can see my live work on the portfolio, including Alfazex, Enerazon Nutrition, The Mehendi Studio, Morning India (Vidyakalp Dairy), Induli, Malkin by Taluja, and the grypX, IMI Glasses and LoveMe apps on Google Play.
4. 12 questions to ask before you hire
- Can I see three live projects similar to mine?
- Who will actually do the work, you or a team?
- Which technologies will you use and why?
- What exactly is included: pages, features, revisions, hosting setup?
- What is the total price and what could make it go up?
- How long will it take and what are the milestones?
- How do payments work: advance, milestones, final payment?
- Will I own the domain, hosting account and source code?
- Will the site be mobile friendly and fast, and how will you check?
- What happens after launch: bug fixes, support, maintenance?
- How will we communicate and how often will I see progress?
- Can you give me the agreement in writing?
5. Red flags to avoid
- A price far below everyone else's with no explanation of what is included.
- No live projects, or projects they cannot explain.
- Asking for full payment upfront with no written agreement.
- Keeping the domain, hosting or code in their own name so you cannot leave.
- Guaranteeing number-one Google ranking. Nobody can promise that honestly.
- Unclear answers about who owns what after the project.
- Disappearing between messages for days before work has even started.
6. What does a freelance developer cost in Lucknow?
There is no single price because projects differ. Cost mainly depends on:
- the number of pages or screens and how custom the design is;
- features such as online payments, booking, user accounts, an admin panel or WhatsApp automation;
- whether you need Android and iOS apps or only a website;
- the deadline, and whether content and images are ready;
- ongoing maintenance, hosting and marketing after launch.
A freelancer is usually cheaper than an agency because you pay for the work, not for office and sales overhead. The trade-off is that one person has limited capacity, so ask about their availability. For a quick estimate use the cost calculator on the homepage, then confirm the exact price on a call.
7. Freelancer vs web development company in Lucknow
- Freelancer: direct contact with the person building your project, flexible, usually lower cost. Capacity is limited and you depend on one person.
- Agency: a team with designers, developers and project managers, useful for very large projects. Higher cost, and you may talk to a salesperson rather than the builder.
For most small and medium businesses, startups and local brands, a good freelance developer is the better value. For a very large platform with many moving parts, a team may be safer.
8. What a fair freelance agreement contains
- scope: the pages, features and deliverables in writing;
- price, payment schedule and what happens if scope changes;
- timeline with milestones;
- ownership: domain, hosting, database and source code transfer to you on final payment;
- number of revision rounds included;
- support period after launch and the cost of ongoing maintenance;
- confidentiality and how either side can end the project.
A message thread on WhatsApp or email that confirms these points is far better than a verbal promise.
9. Hiring a freelance developer for your Lucknow business
Local businesses across the city hire freelance developers for similar reasons: they want a website that works on phones, shows up on Google Maps, and sends enquiries to WhatsApp. I work with businesses in Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj, Aliganj, Indira Nagar, Jankipuram, Alambagh, Rajajipuram, Mahanagar, Vikas Nagar, Chinhat, Aminabad, Faizabad Road, Sitapur Road, Kanpur Road, Telibagh, Sushant Golf City, Kalyanpur, Triveni Nagar, Charbagh, Munshipulia and across Lucknow, and with clients remotely in other cities.
Typical clients and use cases include clinics and hospitals, coaching institutes and schools, jewellery shops, restaurants and cafes, real estate agents and builders, lawyers and advocates, boutiques and fashion stores, gyms and salons, startups and SaaS teams, D2C and e-commerce brands, NGOs and associations, local service businesses. If your type of business is not listed, the process is the same: understand your customers, build a fast site, set up local search and make contacting you easy.
10. Hiring checklist
- Decide what you need: website, store, app, WhatsApp automation or a mix.
- Shortlist three freelancers from different sources.
- Open their live projects on your phone.
- Ask the 12 questions above and compare answers.
- Get scope, price and timeline in writing.
- Pay in milestones, not everything upfront.
- Confirm domain, hosting and code will be in your name.
- Test the finished site on at least two phones before final payment.
11. Frequently asked questions
How do I find a good freelance developer in Lucknow?
Search Google and Google Maps for the type of developer you need, check live projects on your phone, read reviews, and ask other local business owners for referrals. Shortlist three and compare their answers to the same questions.
How much does a freelance web developer in Lucknow charge?
It depends on the number of pages, custom design, features such as payments or booking, and the deadline. Ask for a written scope with a total price. You can get an instant estimate from the cost calculator on the homepage.
Is it better to hire a freelancer or a company?
A freelancer is usually better for small and medium projects because you work directly with the builder and pay less overhead. A company can suit very large projects that need a bigger team.
Should I pay the full amount in advance?
No. Pay an advance to start and the rest in milestones, with the final payment after you have tested the finished work.
Will I own the website and the code?
You should. Insist that the domain, hosting account and source code are transferred to your name when the project is paid in full. I hand these over on every project.
Can a freelance developer also set up WhatsApp automation?
Yes, some do. WhatsApp Business API, automated replies, booking flows and AI chatbots are things I build for clients along with their websites.
Do you work with clients outside Lucknow?
Yes. Most of my work is remote through calls and WhatsApp, with clients in Lucknow, Gurgaon and other cities.
